The Road to IFAA-India
As I write this blog, it gives me immense pleasure to let you know that I am part of IFAA- India (International Fitness & Aerobic Academy) 2014 which is just 2 days away.
It was sometime in 2008 when I had just graduated from Barry John's Acting Course and was somewhere like most actors preparing a speech as if I am going to get to the Filmfare awards some day ( I want to let you know that every actor, at any stage, always has a speech ready in his / her head), and after getting back from my Brothers Big Fat Indian Punjabi Wedding and enjoying the success of winning the Biggest Loser, and after resigning from Standard Chartered Bank in 2007 after Working with the best team for 5 years under the guidance of some amazing and awesome people it was time to make and find a new place on the work front.
I was asked by my rakhi brother( well I say rakhi brother because I tie rakhi to his sister), Amit and his Sister in law Meenu if I could train Varu Sarathkumar for her movie Podaa Poodi and I actually took up the job just to see if I was capable of changing someone else's life ( not that she had to lose a lot of weight but she lost a good 7 kg's in about 45 days), and wanted to explore the possibility of seeing if I could apply the same madness I had in me on someone else. Basically, it's a lot different when you have to change your own life and then have to go same someone else's life, you really don't know if they will listen to you, be as disciplined and patient like you, be as dedicated like you, be as punctual as you, or just be you in a way.
At the same time, I got a call from this girl Amrita, who today is a very good friend, who was my First Client back in 2008 whom I just consulted over the phone and gave her a diet and had my ways and means of consulting her and keeping her on her feet. It was back then I knew it that I had something in me which I wanted to share with the world.
Right after winning the Biggest Loser, I knew I would be a part of the Fitness Industry, but I had no direction as to how to go about it. Many said, open your own chain of gyms or a personal consulting studio but I just wasn't convinced to take the plunge. After the Personal Training Experience with Varu and Consulting Amrita, I knew it that this is what I am going to do for the rest of my life no matter what, fitness was such a beautiful part of my life and having won the show without sharing the secrets with so many Obese Sandeep's like me would not be fair. That day, I can't recall the date, I had decided that I am going to become one of the Biggest Motivational Speakers in the world. Again, I just didn't know when and how that would happen.
Comes 2008 end, and I manage to get Vikram Aditya Bhatia's Number - CEO for Fitness First India and I call him to explore the possibilities of working with Fitness First. He was in Singapore and chatted with me for 10 minutes and told me that Amer Haleem- Marketing head for Fitness First is going to touch base with me and we will meet. A couple of meetings in mumbai and Delhi and finally in 2009, Fitness First signed me on as their Personal Training Ambassador and Celebrity Personal Trainer, hosted many events at all our clubs across India "Fitness Ki Paatshaala" which helped me talk and interact with members and I knew it deep down with more clarity that this is what I love the most, talking about Fitness, talking about BMR , making concepts so simple for even a blonde to understand( literally). Having been working as a Nutrition Counsellor and now, the Nutrition Manager for Fitness Manager, for the last 2 years ( would be completing 2 years as a Nutritionist on October 15th, 2015), I can just say I love fitness. I love my clients for having their trust in helping them change their lives.
Just like banking, work wasn't work, it was fun, I was loving what I was doing and at the same time, I would go for my auditions and screen tests and get some shoot or the other to keep my acting career also going.
Over the last 5 years plus, Fitness First has played the Pivotal role in keeping me fit, both mentally and physically. When I say mentally, I mean, I have met such Inspirational people over the last 5 years that has always kept me Motivated and it till date they do. Shivali Sharma, Ritesh Shaiwal, Deepak Rawat, Pele Ramdhani, Amer Haleem, Salil Gogia, Jaspreet, Rakhi, CJ, Komal, Nitesh, Praveen, Manish, Marcus, Vivek Parlekar, Akshay Kapur, Francis Sir, Meera, Sam, Arjun, Nisha, Ricky, Abhishek, Preetesh, Pooja, Hannah, Karan, Shivam, Shivangi, Rahul, Niren, Shankar, Dharti, Rina, Heena.... ( this list is too long and I will be at the edit for this again). There is nothing better than having a great team who creates the best energy and help you bring the best out from you.
Am sure some of my friends while reading this must be still wondering as to how can a fat kid who lived to eat ( the unhealthy food), be going on a stage with master trainers and enthusiasts from across the world to go and talk on nutrition and motivation. Sometimes I also can't believe it. Infact till a couple of years back, I had a huge Fat cutout of mine and I would wake up seeing that cut out, for many reasons it motivated me, and for many reasons it used to even let me eat my butter chicken and beers occasionally then.
If I have to look back at things, I am so glad , I went on the Biggest Loser , lost all the weight there, maintained it , changed my body composition which I am still working on and will continue to do so by adapting to only the honest ways. The main reason to get to what I am doing is to help everyone understand that how you can eat and drink and enjoy life just by understanding the how's of fitness, eating and exercising. You should train your mind to eat and drink everything depending on which situation you are in, whether it's a normal day, or a wedding or a party, or going for the movies, or may be an impromptu plan, it's all about understanding how to balance your different lifestyles and yet remain fit.
It's easy, anything initially is difficult, but eventually it becomes easy and you need to find something more challenging and difficult, which also becomes easy eventually, it's a circle. You got to be at it, keep on exploring and keep yourself motivated.
I am so glad Smita , that you got married, because that's where I got to meet Kez and that's how the story of IFAA started in Goa. Am so glad you got married.
After taking my 154th RPM class with every bike taken, the adnan farewell class with Anisha, Priyanka, Anju, Rishabh, Varun, Sandy, javed, Rachana Ma'am, I am so pumped up that I knew I wanted to write this blog today.
Ritesh Shaiwal, I am so happy that you and me are a part of this convention and my respect for you in the field of fitness is something no one can ever match up to. You are the craziest person I know of after myself. Shivali Sharma, I can't thank you enough for always creating and seeing the best in me which not many have been able to see. You are my true mentor.
When I get on that stage on Friday and Saturday, I know it's going to be me speaking but there is going to be part of so many people that I would be representing.
Thanks to every person on the biggest loser team, Arun, natty, Varun, Andrew, deepika, yusuf, Hiren, Ravi, Ajay, gracious .... ( again I am going to fill this space because u know I love each and everyone from my biggest loser team). Thanks to all my friends, each one of you have inspired me in your own way. Always thankful to god, for giving me the best possible family who are in Delhi and Royal Palms( 2000 Km's away and 20 Km's away).
Last but not the least, I am going to dedicate these powerful moments to 3 of the most energetic people I know off, my oldest girlfriend Mamajiiiiiiiii who is always missed (whenever I went to Delhi post the biggest loser, my granny- Mamaji would not remember that I had lost weight and would ask me have u stopped eating and what's happened to you, I would love narrating how I lost my weight, sometimes once a day and sometimes 5 times a day, I miss that so much )and my two Rasgulla Angels, Aaradhya and Akshayaa. I swear my heart beats so fast when I think of them.......
For the love of fitness........
